What comes to mind when you think of large dog breeds? Chances are that size will be your primary concern. Either you worry that you can’t handle a massive dog, or that a dog the size of a calf just won’t fit in your home.
But some large dog breeds are created slim, like the Great Dane, Greyhound and Saluki. And the largest of these three dog breeds requires the least exercise. In fact, the Greyhound and Saluki are lightning fast and will need a large yard to run at will. After a decent amount of activity, the Great Dane will gladly turn into a couch potato.
Just because two large dog breeds are classified by the American Kennel Club as Sporting Dogs does not mean they are identical in character. The Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever and the Pointer for example may all be gundogs, but breeding and history have produced differences in character.
While both the Labrador Retriever and the Pointer respond very well to commands if well trained, the Golden Retriever is more of a good natured kind of dog and makes an excellent pet if you have children.
The same goes for the Working Dog group. While the Rottweiler, the Doberman Pinscher, the Great Dane, The Siberian Husky, and the Mastiff are all classified by the AKC as working dogs, again they can differ greatly in temperament.
The Mastiff and the Rottweiler are both very protective of their owners, but while the first is generally easygoing and loyal, the Rottweiler is more temperamental and can become aggressive. The Doberman Pinscher stands somewhere between the two. Alert and obedient, he is the perfect guard dog as he is also fearless and resourceful.
While both enjoy a lot of activity, the Great Dane tends to be more easygoing, gentle and affectionate. The Siberian Husky on the other hand is highly athletic and a tireless worker. He also seldom barks – a perfect neighbor…
When choosing among large dog breeds the perfect one for you, bear in mind that every puppy is individual, much like humans. Don’t forget that mixed large dog breeds make marvelous pets too, and many are waiting for adoption right now. Pick or be picked carefully!
